Hello, I am new to the salt water scene, I have a question about water motion in my tank. I have a 130 gallon with two hagen 802 power heads for my undergravel filter moving 400 gph each and also have a magnum 350 canister filter. When all the pumps are on there is a lot of water motion and I am wondering if there can be too much motion. At this time I am at the start-up phase and have Damselfish in the tank. Do I need all the filters on all the time

My first question is,Why did you go with an under gravel filter??? These are known for causing problems in a saltwater tank. They get clogged, they cause high nitrate readings,They require almost constant maintanence.....But the pumps you have should not be too much,as far as circulation goes....I suggest you read up on UGF's vs a deep "LIVE SAND"bed...My suggestion is that since this is a new setup, you should ditch the UGF now,and go with a sand bed.....

I do have a second Magnum canister filter (magnum 330)you would suggest shutting down the ugf and hooking up the second magnum or would the one 350 be enough for this size of tank? hey thanks for the help

If the 330 is not being used then I would definetly add it. Keep using the two powerheads you have to provide motion and look at using timers or a wavemaker to create a "natural" motion for your tank. Look into a DSB as mentioned above, it's a much better way to go. Good luck!

OK I will hook up the 330 and let the two powerheads run. it just looked as if the fish were working all the time and I was not sure if it was to much motion. Any suggestions welcome as I am in a small town in northern Canada and no one has much knowledge on this subject thanks :)
