To QT A Jawfish?

Wow, I sure haven't been on this forum in a long time. I miss you all. =) Expect to see more of me.
Going to place an order from SWF next week while I'm off school. Will be able to sit by my door to get my package! I'll be ordering a Cherub Angel, a Pearly Jawfish, and a CUC package for my 29, which desperatly needs to be restocked.
Anyways, I was wondering about how I should go about QTing the jawfish? Due to lack of space, he and the angel will be QTed together in a 20 long (normally I'd separate) but I'm worried about the little guy being stressed out without sand to make a protective burrow. Do you think it would be alright to QT these guys with a CC bed?

WOOHOO....Hey FretFreak...glad to see you back
Sorry IDK the answer about the jawfish though.....I would think as long as it has some small pvc it can hide in..it may be ok

Hi Meowzer! You're one of the ones I've missed the most (Along with Spanko, Cran, etc.)
I'm running this through my head and I THINK I've come up with my answer on my own. I was thinking about getting a semi-deep tupper ware container and filling THAT with the CC. I've also got quite a few peices of LR that I think my mantis could spare out of his home. Is that more beneficial in a QT tank, or would that kick start an unwanted cycle?

NAH...if it is in an established tank and you just move it, it won't cause any issues
so what has been happening with your tank?

Ups. Downs. Ya know, the general saltwater experience. lol Hang on, lemme get some timeline pics for ya.

First, my 2.5 gallon during cycle.

Annnd now. Minus the clowns, I had no where to put them when I got them and were in there for a few weeks while another tank cycled. They're out now.

My first clam who lives in the 2.5. Pretty, aint he?

Next, this was a 20 gallon that was meant to be donated to my school. Upon hearing what I was doing, my reef club overtook the entire project and turned it into a beautiful forty gallon breeder with MHs and a custom built stand an canopy. Its still in the process, and this tank isn't up anymore, but its still pretty. =P

Biting off more than she could chew. She was about as big as my pinky fingernail in that pic.

Here's the 29 back in June right after a frag swap with the club.

Some Close Ups

(Yes, the nem was unhealthy. Got it for free and thought I could save it. Not so much.)

Sadly not even two months later, I had my first tank crash due to a malfunctioning heater and lost nearly all the coral. Since then, the tank has looked like this. Well, up until last weekend until I totally renovated it. That brain in the sand bed in the bottom left is the same one twords the center of the pics before the crash. I REALLY hope it comes back to its former glory. That was my all time favorite coral...

And the renovated tank. Now I'm restocking. ^_^

Soo...I can gladly say that I'm experienced now. lol

Those are some great pics...thanks for sharing! I really like the 29g for an all-purpose "desk tank." Just the right size to play in; not too big, not too small.
Your thought about the tupperware in the QT is a good one, provided of course you throw away anything that you use in there if you have to treat for anything. I did something similar when I QT'd a sand sifting Goby. He was trying so hard to pick at the hard bottom QT, so I put a little shallow plastic bowl of live sand in there for him to go to town in. You could also just use some smaller diameter PVC that would act as a pre-made burrow, but your way is definitely more natural for the fish.
I'm impressed with that little 2.5 you showed us pics of. What did you use for lighting in there...the clam looked pretty good in that photo.

When I QT'd my jawfish, I made sure there was TONS of PVC in the tank for him and I put in some rock and observed him, never ran under hypo because I didn't observe any ich. He was stressed at first, but after a while was okay.
In the past I have QT'd sand sifters with a little tupperware container filled with live sand and just not ran the QT under hypo.

Yeah, I know to throw the stuff away. I have soooo much CC sitting around my house from when I made the switch to sand in my 29. Now that was one heck of a project. lol
The light is the same one that was on the 20 long that was taken down. Its a 2x24 watt Sundial Nova T5. It seems the only things that don't do well in that tank are Xenia and Anthelia, but that's no surprise to me. I just cant keep them, they melt in every tank.

Oh really? Just curious, but why not? I would assume that it would be easier for the jawfish to sculpt with. I was planning on using it for the peacock mantis too when I got him, is that a no-no as well?
Good thing I've got some sand laying around too then! lol

The crushed coral can actually tear them up and really make things bad. I've seen horror pictures of Jawfish and gobies put in CC.

I feel your pain, sister. I'm jealous of all those people who can keep this "weed."

+1 I can't keep it alive either, but can keep a large colony of tunicates, LOL

LOL...I can not keep it alive either....I have tried it in the 54G and the 225G....I have not yet tried the 29G, and I'm probably not going to.....With my luck that would be the tank it would flourish in and it would quickly take over HAHA
