I have had a 90 gal with a hang on skimmer for about three years without a sump. What would the benifit of a sump provide me?
Budget is importmant. I have a canister filter. Could I fill it with bioballs and have a benificial effect?

I added a 10 gallon sump to my 55 just to make the DT look a bit cleaner. I had 3 powerheads in there, the heater, the skimmer pump and filter and a HOB filter for when I use carbon. Now most all that stuff is in the sump. There are still two power heads but with the water circulation from the sump pump I was able to remove the third.
I don't really like the overflow box hanging in there, but once it is covered in coraline it won't be as intrusive as the other stuff was.
So far the sump has worked out great for me!

Do you think it would be a good idea to fill my old canister filter with bio-balls and run it? What would the benifit be?
