They are great to have. You may want to check your water paramiters for nitrates.
Populations will rise and fall with available food sources, and available preditors.
I used to have tons when I had a 55 gallon setup with crushed coral and heavy nitrates.

Pod populations increase and decrease on their own. They seem to maintain a good balance.
And yes..... they're very good to have.
For a reef tank I think they are very beneficial, but if you wanna get rid of yours, you could get a green mandarin. mandarins are really neat I have one in my 55 gallon.
