too much bio filtration

I don't think there is such a thing as too much bio filtration. I think Nitrates are usually the result of detritus buildup such as overfeeding, dead spots in the tank etc.

I don't think there can be to much bio filtration either. The bacteria will only reproduce enough to handle the bio load of your tank. If you have 5 gallons of bio balls in a wet/dry and only 1 small fish your bio balls won't have many bacteria on them.

Exactly right, Slick. It is impossible to have too much bio-filtration. The bacteria multiply or die to accomidate the amount of food available to sustain them. For this reason, it is always a good idea to be sure you buy MORE than enough bio-filtration equipment, and not too little. Because while you can't have too much, you can have too little if you don't have enough space with favorable conditions for the bacteria to grow.
