Too much filtration?

I've heard some say you can have too much water movement, be never too much filtration.
Well, I'm building this sump for my 55G. It's a F&I tank, some low light corals. It's got 70lbs of LR. The sump will be a 20G AllGlass tank housing a skimmer, heaters and UV sterilizer. The sump will not be sectioned off. Water will flow into a filter bag for pre-filtration. The skimmer is a HOT, but will sit in the sump.
Exiting the sump I have the option to pull the water through a 10 inch Ocean Clear canister filter with at bag of activated carbon. (I just happen to have one)
I guess the question is: Is the Ocean Clear over kill? Will it over filter things? Is this too much mechanical filtration? Or is it a good idea?
Thanks again!

Mechanical filtration takes "garbage" out of your system. So in my opinion, can you have too much mechanical filtration? No... just be careful that the canister filter you're using doesent become a nitrate factory. To avoid that, just clean it about once a month. As far as the carbon goes... I seriously doubt it would hurt. You could even put some bioballs or nitrate sponges in the media holder of that canister filter along with your carbon.
Just remembered... If I were you, I would have the canister filter on the way into the sump, not the return to the tank... that way you will remove all the big nasties before they get all up in the place where the little nasties are going to be treated.
