I have a Tang I need to remove from my 55 gallon tank. I have SPS, LPS, and soft corals and about 100 lbs. of rock.
I have tried catching the Tang with a hook, the bottle trap, and with a net after letting it get used to the net.
I am now at the point were I will do anything, so I am going to pull out all the rock and catch him.
If I can ship SPS overnight, surely a short removal from the tank into a temporary container would be okay.
What do you guys think?

Take out as much water (save the water) as possible to make less swimming space for him, easier to catch. Then put the water back in or just do a good water change. Keep the water heated if out for any length of time and you plan on reusing it.

I always thought the best method to ship sps is to wrap in wet newspapper or bounty paper towel. Always work great. As for removing the tang, make plans to have heaters and flow in a temporary storage.

yes, i would think you should be just fine putting them in a container of the tank water for the period of catching him...

I am going to wait till the lights go out (10:00pm central) to do it. I am going to go home and go to sleep, get up at 10:00pm and break out the rum and coke and get busy.

now my tang always slept in the same spot and when I went to catch him I used a red light and I left the net in the top of the water and the canopy opened and a little while after dark I used the light and scooped it up before he knew what was coming. he was the only fish it worked on though the rest slept in the rocks.

hey tx reef, not to hijack, but i think i read that you use the XM 14k bulbs? do you like them? I am thinking about replacing mine with them
And on topic, your sps will be fine, no worries there, and i would like to be able to rearrange my rock, but dont have the time and effort to put into it, however i am off for the next 2 days so maybe i will... i need a different flow pattern anyways.

no offense taken, but the original question was in fact about his sps and whether or not they would be okay, for the breif time out of his tank they should be fine, i did how ever see the other posts on this thread about shipping them, that wasn't the topic at hand however.

The Best Way to Catch a Fish............
This is what I do & have never had a problem....
First you need to find a piece of sturdy plastic material & cut to the WxH of tank. Top of clear storage container is ideal...
Also needed is a throw away refrigerator storage container, the bigger the better... Nets work, but are bad for fish....
Either drill or punch holes evenly top to bottom. (to ease movement through water) A solder iron is ideal as the cleanup is less than drilling...
Move as much rock as possible to one side... then ease the pre-designed plastic into the tank at an angle. (enough for all fish to move through) You them must attempt to Herd the desired fish to the smaller area. I have found that a long handled algae scrubber works well.. You will likely herd more fish than you intended but will be able to weed them out with a little luck... Once the desired fish is in the small area, close the angle of the plastic & the fish is now in a small area.. (with no rock work) Once that is done you dip the storage container into the tank & capture the fish... if you get more fish than intended... empty out at least 1/2 the container & pluck them out with your hand & return them to the tank... Works really well & I have never failed.. I have never had to use a net.
I should also add that one should have the cover of the storage container close at hand.....
Good Luck.

I am still at it. I have placed the rock back into the tank and am re-filling it. After I let everything run for a while I will place the corals in.
Good thing I took that nap or else I would be pretty tired. At least I have the Captain to keep me company.....
