hey everyone! i was just wondering about the top offs for small nano tanks. i know water evaporates very quickley b.c of the small size and heat from the lights, i herd that u need to top off just about every day. and also do ur water changes, im just not sure how often u have to do ur water changes, is it stil every other week for a 12 gallon or do u just do water changes for ur top offs?. are top offs and water changes different? are top offs just adding water into the tank ( b.c when water evaporates it leaves the salt) and then water changes u have to do the salt and the other stuff. how do u go about changing water in nanos? thanks for ur help!

Yes, top offs are different than water changes. Just make a water level mark on your tank so you know how much fresh water you need to add (be sure to use RO/DI water). As for water changes, just syphon out water into a bucket for dirty water and then you add the new salt water from a seperate bucket that you use to make your salt water. I also have a 12g and i do a water change every week changing about 3 gallons.

My tank is made by cube masters. It originally had 2 sponges, carbon, ceramic rings, and bio balls in the filter, but i took everything out in filled it with small pieces of live rock. In the first chamber put a small piece of sponge filter ( I use the one by marineland that comes in a big sheat so you can cut yourself a piece that fits). I also occasionally run a bag of carbon.

ok so heres the thing. im a senior in HS and i have always loved animals. i just started researching SW about 6 months ago or so. ive had a 30 gallon FW tank and just got bored of it. my brothers birthday was yesterday and mine is on the 18th. ive been nagging my parents to let me get a SW tank and they have been kinda sketchy about me getting one b.c 1.) i leave for college in a year and then after a year of college im going to serve a 2 year mission for my church. then i get back from my mission and basically will never live at home again.ie. finish college get married if i find that perfect one. so i wont be home to take care of the tank.2.) when i leave my younger brother is responsible for the tank and they dont know if hes up for the task. anywho, for my brothers birthday present i told him to ask for a 12 gallon nano, b.c the price isnt that bad and it comes basically ready to fill just anjoy. well low and behold my parents told him that we could get a tank. my dad does not want a 12 gallon nano b,c he said if hes going to spend that kinda money on a tank he would want a tank that u can "acutally put a good amount of cool fish in". so now im trying to figure out what size tank and the filteration we should get; and i kinda already know what type of fish we want. heres the list
1 valintine,blueline, or spotted puffer.
1 blue throat trigger
1 lawnmower, watchman gobie ( or anything to shift the sand and eat algea
3 schooling fisih ( chromis )
1 dwarft angle
2 ( a pair ) of clowns
and if room 1 to 2 tangs
what size tank would work for this stock list. a must in this list is the blue throat, puffer and a pair of percs. so work around that. thanks so much for your time and for helping me out. i really appreciate it. oh PS immm sooooooo freakin excited we're going to be getting a tank! ( i just hope my dad knows how much its going to add up to and what hes getting himself into! haha. thanks again

Wow! You are going to be a busy guy! So anyways with that amount of fish and the kind you want, I would guess no smaller than a 100 gallon. I’m not positive, so I suggest you go to the new hobiest thread, post your list there and ask them what size tank is possible… good luck!
