I have not seen this happen with mine..... As to this being normal, no I do not think so..
Do the lose pieces still have any of the skeletal matter attached, where they broken off, or are they soft body only? Is there any chance that something in the tank is trying to eat it?? If they are just soft body pieces . I would think there is some issue here that is causing the coral to shed or breakdown. Unless a critter of some type is to blame. If the pieces still appear viable, I would place them in a safe area to see if they make it.........
Maybe someone else will pipe in now that this is bumped up .
Mine over 20 heads and has grown from a one head frag, and I have never seen this occur with mine. Good luck with the coral.........
