Tornado Season

The season is coming when Tornado's will be touching down and power outages may be likely? I was just wondering if I could get some feedback as to what kind of back-ups people have with larger stsyems? Generators or maybe battery powered, I just wanted to be safe and perhaps get something as a back-up, any advice?

What part of MI are you from???Down here(SW MI) we havn't had one in years. But a backup plan is allways a good idea.A generator is obviously the best way to go.I have a 5000 watt one that can just about run the whole house(if I can keep the kids from turning on every light). Also alot of people use battery backups(UPS) these will only keep your tank running an hour or so MAX.I have also heard of some using power converters hooked up to thier cars battery. This seems a better idea than the UPS...But if you are caught totally unprerared, your tank should be OK for two or three hours with NO HELP.After that you should try to circulate the water as much as possible for airation.Just take a large cup and dip out some water, then DUMP it back in...Do this for 5min or so every hour...If you can do this with your filter, you will keep the bacteria in there from dying also....

you guys think yall have a problem with Tornados? move where I am! LMAO if I ever have a power out, I will definatly use the old car battery and an inverter.......we do that to go night fishing, and we haven't had a problem running 2 100watt bulbs all night long.

I have a 30gal FOWLR and ran it just fine for 12 hours with a power inverter that plugs into your cigarette lighter in your car (had a windstorm that knocked out power). This is a much cheaper way to go than a generator, but it also depends on how much you are going to run off of it. Good luck!

Had hurricane hit when I lived in MD. 5000 watt generator ran all hardware (2 pumps, 2 heaters, 3 MH (675 watts total). PLUS tv, computer, and refrigerator. Still need to get plug adaptor for 220 volt outlet to run stove if need be. Only prob was lack of outlets. Power strips only help ya so much.
