Anyone wanna do a totm thread or threads? It would be kool! Obviously swf wouldnt be sponsering it so no prizes but it would give someone bragging rights for the month

just tryin to spice up the site a bit...an i see lots of n00bs...this would inspire them and keep em here and get more maybe??!?!

maybe a mod or someone could post the pic of the totm somwhere?
I was thinkin one FTS and a random pic of ur fav coral or fish?!?!

Tank of the month sounds good to me. I thought I tried to get one started three years ago but it never took off. I also tried to get product reviews written and I flooded the forum with them and no one did anything and then BAM, three years later I see product reviews as part of the site. Oh well...
Are there any rules? Where does one post their tank for judging? Who decides which tank should be tank of the month? How about the last person to win sends the new TOTM owner something out of their tank?? lol. Sounds fun, kind of like the thermos trading threads.
I would like to see this come to fruition - but it will take some time and dedication on behalf of some people who may not have the time to do it... We will just have to see! ?!?!?!

I like the idea of sending the someone a piece of ur tank...if they win! Also the previos winner could decide the winner of the net month?

This would have to be dedicated though from hobbyist to hobbyist and the price of overnight shipping is ridicoulous!
Only rule i can think of would be, "It has to be a current and up to date pick".... No pics of 6months ago or a previous tank u had going yrs ago!

I like the idea! though I like my fish more than the whole tank though.....most corals just grow too slow, and I;ve got some space to fill still...

Not sure how you would do it though. Other places have the month vote thread linked to each individual tank thread, with only 3-6 entries for each TOTM. I think you sort need a thread to share your tank. Just posting two or three pics, it really doesn't give much of an idea about the tank. For example someone posts an superb macro shot of some acan or acro or whatever. While it's obviously awesome, it isn't necessarily on topic. This is for TOTM, meaning the full tank and system. Just not one or two "glamor" shots to catch votes.
I really like the current tank idea. I would even take it a step further and require recent pics as well. Not the same old pics members have shared tons of times already. They wouldn't have to take new pics each month, something like maybe 6 months from the first time they entered the contest.

really we need a mods approval me thinks! Also isnt their a voting thing on here so everyone could just vote? Kinda like the picture thing they used to do?
We need more rules too! I want this to be fair and anyone can have a chance of winning! Maybe a theme for diffrent TOTMs or something idk?!?!

I'm all for the TOTM thread. Why not send Ladyreefseeker a PM about it (or even this thread)? They could do voting like they did for the photo contests, but with more clearly defined rules than before. Or the maybe the mods could vote for the TOTM?

Well that's sort of what I mean. What's something random? A really cool shot of a coral or fish is nice and all, but again, not sure if it should help to add votes to a TOTM contest Also I think just a FTS + 1 pic would tend to hurt the larger tanks. As when zoomed out to FTS, you tend not to see all the smaller items in a tank.

Maybe if we did do the winner trade deal, they'd need to write off on it. Having admin or a mod add a sub-section to the contest/photography section for TOTM would be a good idea.
Those voting threads are just polls which any member can make.

Someone would need to control it ... someone who would post the three threads it would take to decide who won...
First thread for submissions
Second thread for voting
Third thread for the winners pics.
Rules?
How about there be guidelines for submissions... like...
1. A picture of the tank THIS MONTH, full tank shot
2. Your favorite macro/micro shot
3. A picture of the equipment setup
4. A brief description of the tank and why you feel you should get TOTM.
The submission thread would be open until the weekend before last of the month and no other submissions would be accepted. Then that would leave one week of voting in which anyone could vote on their favorite tank and the winner would be declared at the first of the next month and a new submission thread started....
The winner would get their own thread titled something like "xmonth 20XX TOTM, Name." and they can put as many pics in it as they want with full descriptions and honors etc. Whatever they would want to do. Possibly let the runner up get an honors...
As far as prizes go the first ever winner of TOTM wouldn't get a prize if you did have to send a frag off to the next winner. Not fair for the first winner. But, we can figure all of that out along the way. The mods would have to sign off on frag swapping for TOTM winners though. Maybe bragging rights would be better? "Oh yeah? Well, you weren't TOTM last year!" lol
I would really like a TOTM thread started on this forum - as long as it's controlled and fair.

Personally, I think you'd get more action in a "FTS thread" as opposed to a TOTM thread. TOTM sounds like a good idea in theory, but someone has to run it, peeps have to submit pix, and then peeps have to vote. Also, would it be limited to reefs? FOWLR? Something else?
Of course, the more well known folks or those who have a lot of friends on the boards tend to win.
IME, they go along fine for a month or two, then they just fade away as folks lose intertest.
I've seen it happen on more than one forum...for instance, on the SH site, it went from resurrecting TOTM, to SHOTM (seahorse of the month), to oblivion.
So I vote for a moderated FTS thread with lots of nice pix and very limited OT comments.

Whatever happens, what about the idea of video submissions? Either as entries for TOTM, or a "Share your tank vid thread." Videos would allow you to film all aspects of a tank rather then just a pic of two.

Most people have something that takes video now a days and good quality too!

might help with those stupid LEDs as well....they dont do so well in pics!

Videos could be appropriate - as far as I am concerned. But I believe the tank of the month thread should also contain pics of the tank and all of the componants. I also think that in the video there should be some kind of time stamp to prove that it's from the month that is being voted on.

ya i dont think ipods or ipads or iphones have the date in the video or the pics! I think i can adjust my digital camera to display the date....now i have to play with it when i get home....
