trace elements

I have no corals since my flowerpot died. Do I still need to add trace element supplements. I do have fish and crabs and snails. The reason I ask is I have a red and gray algae problem bad. I want to choke them out. Would this work by not adding anything to my tank. Do fish and inverts need supplements? also, I have been noticing my nitrites going up now at .05 last month they got up to 2 I did a water change and got them down. What could be going on? I'm tired of doing water changes every 2-3 weeks.

By adding trace elements you encourage the growth of coraline algae (the pink or purple stuff), which chokes out other algae. Definitely a good thing.
