I am going to setting up a new tank was wondering if I should bypass the Trickle Filter and stick with live rock and some type of mechanical filter(canister filter etc) and a protein skimmer as the form of filtration?

What size tank are we talking about here? Live rock is more natural looking not only to people, but more importantly to the fishies. I have heard that for cost reasons some poeple with really large tanks will use trickle in conjunction with live rock since good live rock can be around $10 a pound.

I would, and am eventually going to, go with a DSB and live rock with at least 2 power heads for circulation. I am going to use a Protine skimmer is a sump set up that I will design ( power head #3). You shouldn't need a canister filter if you use a prefilter for the sump.
