I want to attempt to grow my own Tridacna clams. I am aware that it is pretty hard to do, but I want to give it a shot. I heard that it takes alot of light. Can anyone out there give me some guidance on growing them? I know that someone out in cyberspace wrote a paper on how to do it, but i dont know his name and i cant find it. Any help would be great.. Thanks

Well first off this is a very hard endevor you want to go into. You usually have to induce the clams into spawning.I read in eric bornemans book he had 2 clams on his top frag shelf. He dident top off for a few days and when he looked at the tank they had been out of the water for quite some time.He immediatly put them back in.within a few hours the clams started spawning every 2 minutes.About a week after they have spawned follow then next instructions.---
This is the part that makes me never wanna try clam farming. You have to take the nicest looking specimen of whatever type of clam you have.Scoop out the insides, put it in a blender. And pour it back into the tank.Keep in mind while yu do this water changes should be done every2-3 hours.for 3-4 days.(if possible)THe reason you grind up your nicest loking specimen is because in home tanks there is naturally not enough zooxanthallae (hope i spelled it right)to give the clams color and help them survive. You chop up the clam to use its zoxanthallae For the (baby clams).Without doing this the clams wont survive.

I will keep you posted. I just spoke to my friend who is the real mastermind with the clams. He said that we would not be "breeding" them. He can get like 2" clams for like a 2 bucks a piece. We are gonna give it a try. If it succeeds then i will be selling them when they get to about 4 inches at a great price. We are building a special table to grow them in. We will see!!

Absolutely. If i can get them to grow healthy i will trade some off. Or sell them if noone has stuff to trade. I want to have them so that it can sustain my tank with new stuff. My 180 will take a little bit to fill.

Clams need a large amount of light, since you really dont feed them.So not really sure if the pc's will be good enough.
When i get my table built and i get my first set in, i will post the pics. Will not be for at least a month or 2, i have to set up everytying. New skimmer, calcium reactor, new ro unit. New 90 gal fuge. Have to get all the materials.. But i will keep you all posted.

It can live under PCs just place it towards the top of the tank so it can get the most light.
just looked it up to be sure they also need Iodine and Calcium(given lol)

they dont literally ''need'' you to dose it.The levals just need to be kept in check.I think when he says ''need'' he means that the clams use up alot of these elemants.Remeber never add anyhting you cant test for
