i curently have a 75 gall fish only i run a oceanic trikle filter ehiem 2217 and a emperor400 im swithing it over to a reef set up and putting my fish in a 125 Is it possible to run a sucssefull reef with a trickle filter and the other filters i have my concern is that the nitrate will be to high because of the trickle filter i also have a seaclone 100 protien skimmer. If i cant use the trickle filter can i replace the bioballs in there with some live rock and use that as a filter I know a regular sump would be better but i have this set up already and im trying to save alittle bit of money somehow.Any advise would be helpfull i see some fish stores run trikle filters and some are using sumps i can use some advise

Just convert the filter to a fuge. Add a coralife 2x9w 6500k light, remove the balls and just toss in some chaeto.

chaeto is another form of algae, kinda grows in a big clump, It's not invasive like the others so if it get out of control you just yank it out of the tank or trim it back.
