Trouble with nitrites

I have a 34g Red Sea Max, it has been set up for three months now. I bought an angle, skipped the QT(It was from the same LFS everything else came from) and it had ick. I started garlic with brine shrimp, and feed 1 and 1/2 times per day to promote better health with more food. my amonia is 0 nitrates are 0, but the nitates are 2.25. I did a 20% water change yesterday, but still high. There became a lot of green algea on the rocks, and brown on the sand. It has a six line wrass, Flame angel, and two chromis, cleaner shrimp, and other shrimp, the corals are doing awesome, but the ick is not going away, and the nitrites are high. Should I cut back on the feeeding?, or how else do I lower the nitrates and reduce my algea?

what kind of filter?
Over feeding leads to higher nitrates, but that's because of protien buildups in filters.
I'm going refugium soon and can't wait.

It has some bio media, and I put an external magnum 350 for the carbon filter.
It also has a protein skimmer, but it seems to be working fine. 30 lbs LS and 30 lbs LR also, 9 nesarrius, 3 2" turbos, and 15-20 hermitcrabs
