troubled jawfish

hi folks, I just found this group last week and here I am posting to it already, hope someone can help. I'll start with the setup. 55 gal, LR/LS, this tank was started about 8 months ago and had the jaws for about 5 months. tank levels are always stable, AM 0, NI 0, NA 0-5, PH 8.2, SAL 1.020, Temp 78. Like I said, just about what you would want. Levels have been that stable ever since the tank first cycled, with slight variations every now and then but who's doesn't. But nothing off the scale or anything. 2 yellow headed jaws, male and female, have eggs often but so far no survivors, :( Anyways, about 10 days ago the male has developed something in his mouth. He keeps his gills flared but doen't appear to be breathing hard or irregular. In his mouth off to one side it looks like he is keeping a rock but it isn't a rock. Almost like he has on side of his mouth swollen but he eats normal and still moves rock around like he's a dump truck. I'd post a picture but you can only see it at certain angles and he is a little camera shy :D Any ideas or even if you could send me in direction to get help would be great.

Not a clue on this. You sure he hasn't gotten a piece of substrate in there?

Got home from work today and the jaw is laying in the rear corner of the tank. Although this is quite out of the ordinary he still doesn't appear to be stressed or acting different. I have to do some work in the tank tonight so I'll try and catch him to quar. him alone. I figure if he is easy to catch then he must be sick.

I got him into the QT no problem, just moved the rocks and all but scooped him into the net. He didn't seem stressed out about the move but he has now stopped eating and is just laying on the bottom of the tank. It also appears that a minor case of fin rot is setting in, probably due to the stress from the first condition. With him in the smaller tank I can get a better look at his mouth and gills. Gills are definatly swollen at least a little. Breathing is still at a regular interval. He has opened his mouth really wide a couple of times and I do not believe he has substrate caught in there. I looks like he is just all swelled up inside his mouth and throat. I'm prepaired to do what ever I have to so lets hear those suggestions. Thanks.
QT levels
ph 8.2
AM 0
NI 0
NA 10
Sal 1.022
I'm going to bring the salt down a bit just to take any extra stress off and that should also take care of the nitrates.

lost the jaw friday night. Saw no change in the fish when I got home from work and left for dinner about 6. Got home at 8 and the fish was dead. Oh well, I guess I'll be on the lookout for a male jawfish next trip to the LFS.
