Tube worms on Chaeto and then some.

I've had tube worms on my Chaeto since day one. About 3mths now. Recently the population has exploded to the point where the Chaeto is literally covered with them and moving to my LR. I even find them in my substrate. Will this continue till there's nothing left but tube worms? Is there a way to control this if it gets out of hand?

Hi,

Tube worms are what fan worms (feather dusters, or hard tube coco worms) are considered. I don't think that's what you are referring to. Can you describe them, or better yet, post a picture? The last poor soul that thought they had fan worms all over, turned out to be aptasia....which is a very bad pest anemone that spreads like wildfire...lesson learned, so now just to be sure it isn't something bad, we need to know for certain what you are talking about.

Wow, I have never seen that.....Are those wiggling around? To be honest it looks like just dead chaeto, which as it dies, breaks up and goes all over clogging the pumps and everything else.. The good news is at least they are not aptasia.

Nope. Not dead chaeto. Every one of them has fans. They're not extended because I had just added a calcium booster for the hermits. But trust me, they're tube/fan worms.

So what should I do? Or should I do anything?

Hi,

If you are sure they are fan worms and not anything else, just let them be. As the food source dwindles, so will they. The pieces of cheato that are still green, is how it goes sexual and spreads. It clogs up everything when it does that. I personally hate chaeto because of that...what a mess, I was pulling cheato bits out of everything. Check out Golf coast ecosystems, and see if there is another macro you can be happy with, that's what I did.
