Hard/soft?
Approximate diameter and length?
Does anything pop out?
Was it on the rock when you got it, or has it grown since?
It looks kind of like the tubes feather dusters make, but you'd notice them sticking out of the tube.

I had that on one of my rocks I bought from a LFS, started out not being a big deal. Then I noticed them getting longer and longer. Mine began building weird tube things that had one tentacle per tube. They are EVERYWHERE in my tank. Other than looking like crap. They are quite the clean up crew. If I ever have something that would usually need to be netted out, like too much food, even a dead fish. They clean it up. (Luckily no dead fish for 2 years!
) They do look very ugly though in the sand. It's almost like, they took some sand, then glued it all together to make tubes. They still pop out of my sand and rocks without the tubes. So what I do is every once in a while going through my tank just using my fingers to tear apart the tubes, just using your thumb and index finger you can rub it down to just pieces of sand again. They seem unkillable. But in my opinion, if I could of thrown out that piece of rock that had them on them. I wouldn't, cause I'm lazy and they do all the hardwork for me.

Btw, even when a piece of food falls on the sand, and there are about 20 or more in just a square inch grabbing at it. They don't seem to bother bottom dwellers. Just be careful. Even though they are seemingly good. It seems almost impossible to get rid of them without drastic action. Such as throwing out all your sand and live rock and replacing it. Once they're in, they stay unless you act now.
