For anyone new, I am just posting my progress in getting my parameters down. Will stop in a couple of days. tanks are a 20g long with only macro algae, and a 55g display with macro algaes, 5 damsels, a yellow tang, 2 crabs, banded coral shrimp, bunch of hermits, 5 turbo snales, bahama star and green brittle star, star pholpys(sp?) and a rasta or finger leather.
Ammonia both tanks at 0.0 (suspect bump 2 days ago was wrong test-- new test kit i am getting used to)
nitrites: 55g 0.0 20g up one setp
nitrates 55g 160ppm 20g 20ppm
after transfering 4 gallons between the two (two days ago), the 20 gal should have diluted the nitrates to 1/4 original values (4g/16g*160=~40ppm). I suspect the 20g has consumed about half the nitrates added by the transfer. With the nitrItes bumped up (20g long only) I did not swap water between the the two tanks last night. Will see tonight what has happened. All live stock fine and very active. Active growth in the 20g macros and new 'baby' shaving brushes noted

I agree with you 2 for only 1 reason...there is lifestock which could suffer. But since I understand Bob wants to prove his macro algae method of nitrate reduction I would like to know the results.
Bob, I hope you get those trates down fast so your fish don't hate you and roll over!

Let me get this straight.
Bob is taking 160ppm nitrate tankwater from the 55, and swapping it with 20ppm nitrate water from the algae tank ?
4 gallons ?
