Turbo snails fading fast

I've recently purchased four turbo snails, and they all died. I also purchased 5 smaller snails, and they're all alive still. Weird. Do turbo snails need a lot more algae? Only thing I can come up with. Any help will do. Thanks

wow! Turbo snails are pretty robust little critters. I have had them live through fresh water, through 50 degree water, through NO water sitting in a giant pile of extracted crushed coral... there isn't too much that kills them suckers. I've lost about 12 of them in my day to hermit crabs and nurse sharks, but thats it. Interesting post... I'll have to look into that closer.
Thanks,
Jim

My bluelegged hermits tear the turbos out of their shells. I cant keep turbos in my reef for all the B.L.'s in it.

I have to police my blue leg hermits too. Today I saw two on top on an upended Turbo and decided I had to intervene. I plucked the suckers off my seemingly defenseless friend and set him on some live rock where he immediately went to work cleaning again.
Mission accomplished at least for one day.

I tried and gave up on about all snails that were avialable. They just wouldn't live past a couple of weeks. Some, like the astrid, became high maintenance beacuse they required being turned right side up if they fell over (they are not capable of getting back up on their own). I've decide to let this band of clean up crew go.

Turbos the large ones are really not that hardy. Astrea snails are alot tougher, they might be what you now have, they are smaller. Snails can be tough to keep at any rate. What are your water readings?

Turbo snails have a tendancy to acclimate poorly... plus they starve REALLY easily. If your tank is looking clean and you like your snails enough to keep them go by some algea sheets that you normally might feed a grazing tang... that'll keep them busy and fed. The funny thing about these guys is they usually ship practically dry in the bag... yet if you subject them to quick changes in water.... DEATH shall occur.

I bet they do starve easily, because my 2 MONSTERS eat quite a bit of dried seaweed (Nori, plain.) I've had them 29 months now and have added quite a bit of new shell. They suck Nori.
I also feed the hermits Spirulina pellet bits every few days. As I do not have an intensive "reef," I an get away with this without concern about the possible detriment to water quality. Hermits are active busy little guys and most snails are meaty feet that never sleep. I think they just need more food than we give them credit for.
