Turf scrubber updates

Hello,
I havent been on for about 5 months due to work and a new baby.
Just thought i'd pop in and update on some things I've tried with my scrubber.
The scrubber has been up almost 3 years now and have had nothing but good luck with it.
I've tried a few things like letting it grow longer than 1 week without removal.
1.) the GHA on the screen starts to peel off and go into the water. This doesnt seem to harm anything, I just scoop them up when I do tank maintenance
2.) the GHA doesnt grow as thick after you let it grow out without removal for a while.
I've let it go for about 2 months with no cleaning, with no adverse effects except a slight water yellowing. main perameters stayed perfect the whole time.
I'm not recommending this as I have since went back to doing it once a week, just stating that if you go on vacation or something and have to leave the tank to someone else for a week or two its not going to hurt anything.
a few months back I had an issue with moisture getting in my controller for my tank and shorting it out. so i lost my timer. I left the lights on full time instead of shutting them off for 8 hours during the day. Don't do this! while the parameters still look good for the most part, the algea doesnt grow hardly at all because it's getting no rest and probably burnt and you get alot of the blacker slimey algea which isn't supposed to be good.
Also i think I killed off most of my pod population as I don't really see many of those anymore where i used to have zillions. this happened about the same time as the timer issue so I'm assuming they got burned out (no pun intended)
I've also noticed that a good guage of weather your screen is working good or not without testing seems to be GHA showing up on your powerheads a little. I did notice that when the screen wasnt producing due to the the timer failrure. Once the screen grew back in the GHA in the tank was quickly killed off from lack of food.
I'm still feeding pretty heavily, but now I only feed every 3-4 days instead of every day as the fish are fat and happy and usually don't eat all of it anyways and the corals are growing fine.
Overall, i couldn't be happier with the system, it's easy, cheap and super efficient.
Anyone else have any updates on their scrubbers? Good or bad?

Just Deviate - good to hear from you, I haven't been around much either. My scrubber is going strong and I agree with you you can leave them longer than 1 week - I too have gone months with out cleaning. My parameters TBH I haven't measured them in a long time, skimmer is going pulling out a lot of gunk. I think they make a big difference, between the skimmer and scrubber I can't grow macro algae very well in my tanks.

Sorry Justin I forgot to congratulate you on your new baby. I cleaned my scrubber today it was packed with algae. I clean both sides.

Anyone on here tried the newer upflow scrubbers that are underwater and use air bubbles instead of water pumped over the screen?
This is interesting to me. I'm a little nervous to try it since I'm having such luck with my waterfall style scrubber, but it certainly has its advantages if it works as good as the waterfall. In an outage you wouldn't have to worry about the screen drying out, and air bubblers are way cheaper than good water pumps, and if the screen plugs up there is nowhere for the spray to go except into the water.
I think I might make one of these for my frag tank first and see how it goes.

I've looked at them. I'm curious. I've seen some good results, but I haven't been able to test anything out yet.
If you build one for your frag tank, I'd love to see the build.

what's weird is the waterfall one always said that one of the reasons it works is that the light doesn't have to penetrate water like it does in your DT. Well, now with this bubble one it seems that that is not true. I'm wondering if it's going to work as good or if it's more designed for nano tanks.

So it's been a few months since we've had any new input here.
I will say that I had my first bout with scrubber ineffectiveness and it was completely my fault.
So about 2-3 months back i started getting a little GHA and cyano in my dt.
Of course the trates and phos are still testing undetectable so i didn't think much of it.
Well it started getting worse and worse and next thing you know I'm scraping gha off my glass and the tops of my powerheads (none on the rock) all the time.
So i got to thinking about why this would be, and assumed it was me ebing lazy and not doing my weekly cleaning and sometimes letting it slip well beyond 1 week. So I started cleaning the scrubber weekly to try and get back into the groove and export those nutrients.
well last week i noticed that with the little amount of GHA growing here and there other than on my screen the screen is not growing in very well at all.
So i'm at Home Depot a couple days ago and I figured it must be time to start thinking about changing my CFL bulbs in the scrubber.
I go to buy a pack of bulbs and notice that the pack i usually buy now says 23w instead of 27w. So I was forced to buy a very expensive 30w since that's all they had. Sure enough i get home and find that both the bulbs I replaced 3 months or so ago are 23w on both sides.
So i only had enough cash on me to buy 1 of those stupid expensive 30w bulbs (gotta find a new source for 27w bulbs) and I switched out one old 23w for a new 23w (until I can get the 27-30 for that side) and I switched out the other old 23w for the 30w.
That was two days ago, already seeing more growth than I've seen in weeks.
Lesson learned: Don't short the scrubber on lighting! If you do nothing else, make sure it has sufficient water and sufficient lights and clean the screen at least somewhat regularly.
I'll be saying goodbye once again to the GHA in the DT here in another week or so, I know it.

DV8, good to hear your success with your algae scrubber!
I am going to test the upflow version in the coming months with a DIY red LED setup. I'll post in and let you know how it goes.

Easy-peasy. A heat sink from a computer core. Most are about 2.5 inches square, some bigger, some smaller. I happen to have a couple laying around from old computers, and one of them is the perfect size for 4 3w LEDs....plus it has its own fan.
Another good option would be if anyone has an old ice-probe laying around. That has a VERY robust cooling sink attached.
