I am running 7 1/3 times per hour throgh the sump and back into the tank. I also have a Big powerhead for motion in the tank. If something goes wrong in my tank it is going to go wrong fast and furious, so far no floods. HTH Mike

I currently circulate about 8x per hr via power heads and a slow flow refugium...but I plan to develope a sump with spray bars and will shoot for 8-10x per hr without any powerheads except for the 2 Hagen 802's that feed my refugium. :cool:

75 gallon tank.
6 turns per hour continuous - one pump running.
17 turns per hour on timer - both pumps running.
No powerheads in tank.
I like to move a lot of water.

Broomer5,
A lot at 17x but also a good way to imitate high tide. I think a good current is what counts, not how much water your pushing. Thanks everybody.

i definitely think lots of current is best. i have 590gph of powerhead in my 20g. no external filtration.

currently i run about 6 times through my filter2 plus 2 228 powrsweeps in tank. going to add a sump this weekend and get that to 10x plus powerheads and leave the fluval as a big powerhead for movement

mine totals at well over 1400 gph in a 75 gallon,and it is not too strong for anything, the fish love it, IMO, a reef should be a minimum of 10x per hour, even up to 20(or more)
a FO should be 6 to 10 minimum
the key to not being too strong, is go with more powerheads, not over grown ones, adn good circulation is one of the keys to a good tank, esp if using a dsb

75 gallon tank here: (just getting system back up - but is a reef/fish tank - has 60 lbs of rock and 6 damsels right now)
TANK TURNOVER: (7-8x) total water volum
using Mag-7 as primary pump - 700 GPH (at a 4ft rise - likely more like 550 GPH) = 7-8x water volum
BIO MEDIA FLOW: (11 - 13x) total water volum
* the mag-7 above = 7-8x
+ i have an 802 powerhead recirculating the sump water back over the water media as a backup (400 GPH at 1ft rise - likely about 350 GPH) = 4-5x water volum
TANK CIRCULATION: (24x total water volum)
* the mag-7 above - 7-8x
+ 2 - 802 powerheads flowing along the 'back' of the tank - each keeping water flowing among the rock and back. ( 400 GPH x 2 = 800 GPH) = 10x water volum
+ 2 - PS-4 Powersweeps - rotating heads that create AWESOME side/side flow with a diflector on them. (located on front corners of tank - one high/ one low) Creates a WONDERFUL wave affect. (275 GPH x 2 = 7x water volum
* the general rule of thumb i've been told is to be able to put a small cotton ball in the tank and watch it flow around for ciruclation patterns. It should be constantly moving (no dead spots). I do not find the circulation is too strong anywhere as none of the 4 powerheads inside the tank are 'blasting'.
