turning off skimmer

besides cleaning should you just turn off your protein skimmer. Could it sometimes work to well and be taking out necessary minerals or elements.

I leave mine on 24/7... This seems to work fine, I have noticed a little extra "scum" sometimes when I feed phyto or other liquid food, but not always. The growth in all my corals tells me they are getting plenty of the stuff you would think the skimmer might be pulling out, if left on too much.
