Most LFSs do this.
It carries one major drawback though... if a disease or something gets into one tank, it will spread to both. In anticipation of your question... a UV unit does not guarantee any kind of protection from this.
Also treatments like hypo will have to be done for both, even if only one tank requires it.
 
i plan to really have nothing in the second tank. i have been contumplating a hitchhiker only tank. i put the idea up for discussion in the reef forum. thanks. i was just wondering if people have tried it and maybe their mixed results.
