Okay, I just bought a Purple Firefish... he is so cool!! I was reading about them and a couple of sites say they like to be in groups, while another site said they only get along with a mated pair. What do you suggest, I might go get him a friend if you thinks it would make him happier. Do you think he would be happier with a friend or alone?
Thanks

i believe it is kind of a type of goby. i know that most gobys like mated pairs, so i would guess mated pairs, but maybe someone else on here has specific experience with them.

I have always kept my Firefish in pairs when possible. Now since you have 1 already getting the 2nd may be a problem since I don't know how you --- them. I always watched the fish in the tank at the lfs and bought the 2 that hung around each other, but I noticed one was a bit bigger then other. Now depending on your fishes size you can try to go with a larger or smaller one and hope it works (I did that once and it worked OK). Another time I bought the last 3 and within a few days one was killed and the other two lived with each other. Now according to one of books the genital papillae breeding tubes are longer in females then males (it also says if you can see them!). The male may change color or develop longer fins during the breeding period. Now all that is if you have a pair to start, or could get 2 females.
