Can you put two different types of tangs together....for instance a yellow tang and a sailfin tang? If plenty of rock is available for hiding will they do ok?

rule of thumb is you can't put two of them together.but fish are like people i think they have there own personalities.what works in one tank for someone might not work for you .

The rule is generally no, you can't. But like 03 said, there are always exceptions that prove the rule! What size tank do you have and what do you have in it?

I just turned my 100 gallon from freshwater to saltwater....I have a 29 right now that all is going to go in there once it is done cycling. So fish wish all I have now is a flame angel, a bengia cardinal, and a baby yellow tang...all of which in a few weeks will be going in the 100 gallon. I saw a sailfin tang and they are beautiful. Right now all that is in my 100 gallon is five damsels, all doing great, and about 40 lbs of live rock...I have about 34-40 lbs more in my 29 I am going to put in there also. I would think in a tank that size they would be ok.

You should be able to keep those two together in a 100 but not much more. Get rid of the damsels.

I've successfully kept a kole tang and a powder brown tang together in a 75 gallon tank with dead coral and after the pecking order was established there were no further problems. Hippo tangs were also added to this combo. So yes it can be done. Good Luck!

All tangs are different. Right now I have a Scopas and Yellow together in my 125. And I know Mr. Salty has a Yellow and Sailfin in his, so it can be done. Usually tangs w/ different body shapes get along just fine. I've had a lot of experience mixing tangs. I've just about had every one. TJ

Glad to know that I "should" be able to put these two together. I just can't wait for my big tank to be ready to start adding more to it. Thanks for the replies like always and have a good Labor Day. Kelly

I've got a yellow, purple, hippo, and powder blue tang all in an 80g tank. At first, when each one of them was introduced, they were outcasted by the others for a day or two. Now, they all live in harmony and actually pal-o-round together. I just made sure each has it's own hiding place in the live rock and that they were all about the same size. I have never had a problem with them getting along. Every once in awhile one will get testy with another if the other is in it's special hiding place.
