I am building a rack for a 55 and 2 20H tanks, the 55 is on top of the 2 20's, what kind of wood can support this weight? Pine?

IMHO it is not the type of wood but how thick it is and how you build the structure. I have read a lot about building stands and the base structure is very important. I would read up on load bearing. I have read about stands built of pine and oak. I have built several things out of oak and it is expensive, attractive, and much more difficult. But it is very strong and durable.
I am not sure that I have answered your question............COnnie

Funny enough, I used to work in a wood shop, building old looking furniture. Anyways Oak is the strongest wood and of course pretty expensive. Pine is the softest wood pretty cheap and takes stain pretty well. Anyways it mostly depends on the structure itself. Any wood used would be fine if built right. But Oak will be very heavy and sturdy and will last a lifetime.

Build the frame out of two by fours(pine. Then you can cover it with any kind of wood you like. Almost all the quality built cabinets I have seen are done this way...Even my two_One of them has 1/4inch thick paneling for skin. And it holds a 125gal with a canopy. My show tank uses 1/2in ply.It is sanded and painted, and looks GREAT.
