Unbeatable Ich

Back in March I started the thread 23 days in hypo, have 3 ich spots. To summarize what I've been through, I put all my fish in a 20g tank, took it down to 1.009 with a refractometer, which I calibrated with RO water and double-checked with distilled water. After 23 days in hypo, ich spots appeared. This was actually my second hypo effort on this fish, the first one was 22 days, and I concluded it wasn't long enough.
From everything I've read about hypo and ich, it shouldn't have been possible for the ich to survive the free swimming stage and reattach, but it did. Many questioned if it was in fact ich at all. It certainly behaved like ich, reappearing around the 3 week mark.
I decided to take a crack at copper, as a last resort. Got Cupramine and a test kit by the same company and dosed it according to the instructions. Checked the level everyday and adjusted as necessary. Most of the fish did OK, but the yellow tang was near death by day 18. I started removing the copper and eventually she started eating and came around.
So, there I was - 2 attempts at hypo, one at copper, and still some spots reappeared.
After removing the copper, this fish went 25 days without spots. I was finally starting to feel optimistic. I moved all the fish back to the display, and don't you know, one week later the tang had a spot?
It's now been 11 days since then, and my clown has 3 spots too.
I've read everything about ich I can get my hands on, including articles by Steven Pro, Terry B, and Andrew Trevor Jones. I've combed these forums for months. I'm stumped.
About the only thing I haven't tried is the process of moving the fish every few days to a new tank. There's just no way I can do it, I don't have the equipment, time, or energy.
I don't know what to do with my fish right now. I add garlic to the food nightly, hoping they'll at least hang in there. I've contemplated trying an anti-parasitic med like nitroimidazole (e.g. Kick Ich). I've read "50/50 success" rates. What they heck, it's better then 0/3 where I'm at now.
I don't have a specific question at the moment, I guess I just wanted to post this incredibly frustrating experience in the hopes someone will be able to help me out, or maybe someone had a similar experience with a super bug.
I wish I could send my fish to a lab and have them examined, so someone could tell me what the heck this is.

do 3 days in copper. then QT for 10 daYS
get cleaner shrimp, and get rid of the tang.
tang must be a weak fish prone to stress and ICH.
good luck

Terry, I completely forgot about Formalin. I have some, I suppose I can try that, though I didn't think Formalin worked on ich. Or do you still suspect something else besides "standard" ich?

I don't know if it will help, but I will do the 1.007 instead of 1.009, just in case of wrong reading or a little off of calibration.

Wid, the problem with that is the fish's internals are at 1.008, if I'm not mistaken, and it's very dangerous to cross that line. Nevertheless, I calibrated the refrac. with mutltiple sources of pure water.

I read it somewhere that fish can take as low as 1.007. I alway put them in 1.007 and 'top off' at around 1.009 back to 1.007. is it possible the main tank still have ICK after 25 days ? I will raise the temp in the main tank a little during the empty period, so that it speed up any ICK cycle.

You may not like my suggestion that I give you. I say give the tang away. I had done hypo two times and copper two times. Still ick was coming back. Yes I had all the right test kits( for copper} and a refractometer, actually two of them to make sure I was accurate.
Left my main fishless for 45days to make sure I had killed the ick outta that tank. No matter what I did my stupid Hippo Tang always got ick. What cured my ick was taking my tang and BBQing him. I made up a nice glaze to brush on him while he was cooking. Actually it turned out well. Gave most of him to my cat and now the dam cat has ick:eek:
Sorry Ick is so stresfull sometimes I could go crazy. Anyways I GAVE him away. Did a copper treatment on all my other fish left my main fishless for 38days and well no more ick at all for over four months in the tank.
I will never in my life own any type of Tang again. I have had 2 yellows, one hippo and one clown
tang all got ick at one point except the clown. No none of the tangs were ever in the same tank at once.
Good luck to you I know how much it can piss a person off.

You didn't do hypo long enough. The life cycle of Ich is 28 days. I reccomend that you do hypo for 6 weeks to be for sure. I've done this myself and never had any problems with ich after this. I just QT every fish i get. Hypo really works, just gotta do it long enough. :)

Soulfigter, new cysts appeared on the fish on Day 23 of hypo. This means the cysts had broken, the new "ich babies" were in free swimming stage, attached to fish, and became visible. But this isn't supposed to be possible in hypo conditions. When the cysts break, the new free swimmers are supposed to die, unable to survive in hypo. Maybe if I left them in there long enough it would have died out, but it was reproducing in hypo (and copper) conditions.
