i just bought a 7.5lb live rock that was suppose to be cured. but i smelt it and it still had a little odor. i put it in my tank with about 30lbs of other cured live rock. is this gonna cause an ammonia spike?

Probrably. Just watch the levels. 7 lbs should'nt be too bad with 30 lbs already good. How big is the tank? How long has it been running?

I would'nt get too nervous if it goes up a little.
Any inverts in the tank? If so, be sure to not let it get too high. Sombody has a quote that goes something like "a large water change will solve a multitude of sins". He/she is right with that. I forgot who says that though. Just keep an eye on it and you shoud be fine. Ohh ands hope you don't have a mantis shrimp in there...

thanks for the advice. if it does get high, i will do a big water change. i also was curious about the other question on the board about the mantis shrimp. are the that common???

I guess so. I would'nt go over 15% with the water change unless it gets really bad for a sustained period of time (like 2 days or so).

Someone in fish lore said it best. "Getting a mantis shrimp in your Live Rock is like winning the lottery". Maybe the lottery from hell in my opinion. The chances are very small, to be safe put it in a QT and keep an eye on it for a week or so. Then pray like hell one doesnt sneak in <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

Every time you get new LR your tank will cycle slightly. Every time you add uncured (semi-cured) cured LR it will cycle. I don't think you should have a problem but watch the water elvels so you know what to expect the next time you add some cool rock.
