save yourself all the trouble in a couple of years or sooner than that, by not putting a ugf... in the long run ugf imo are nitrate factory's but i am no expert just my thoughts)

with an underground filter, wouldn't all the sand just settle inside it, rendering it useless?

They are 20 year old technology that the hobby has found to be useless. It traps hard particles underneath it and causes massive spikes in water quality. No good at ALL as stated above.
