Thanks to you all -- my tank is moving along. I've been at ZERO ammonia for two days. Nitrite is less than 0.25 and Nitrates are rising (just a bit) to about 20. My inverts and fish are all doing well. So... still a little way to go and I do need more LR at some point. (At about 25 lbs).
Should I do a 5 or 10 gal. water change on my maintenance day (Sunday)?
Even though I did this in a way TOTALLY NOT RECOMMENDED, I felt this hard work was my only other choice than to return everyone to the lfs. I love these guys! I kept an emergency tank up and running in case I had trouble. It is now a QT tank that I use for aging salt water.
Question about snails, inverts, etc. I have 3 snails. Obviously I have almost zero algae, so I give them some seaweed on a rock and they munch on that. Will I be able to stop supplementing their diet when the algae starts to grow... the brown stuff for dentrification (spell?). I also put extra food on the bottom (no too much) for the hermits (six hermits - 1 large, 1 medium and the others small). Can I stop doing this soon? Should I not be doing it at all? They don't seem to eat feces... in fact they seem to drop more than the fish.
I do have some tube worms introduced on two small LR with green carpet algae. The seem to drag junk of the bottom into their tubes, but there are not enough of them.
I don't want to add or change anything until we are well past cycle. We are on our way. I'm thinking about a cleaner shrimp and a sand sifting star.
