I am in the process of upgrading my reef tank from a 55gal to 90gal with built in overflows, and I will have the tank by the end of the month. I want to ditch my HOB filter/skimmer and put a new skimmer in my sump(which I already have) , any sugestions on a skimmer? For lighting I have the 48" lunar auqalight by coralife, which I belive is 4x65w, and I would like to continue using it but would like to add at least one MH, any sugestions as far as balasts, light and fixture?

I am actually in the same situation going from a 55 to a 90 with built in overflow. My biggest concern is how to transfer the livestock without damaging it

I am going to get 2-3 rubbermaid bins and fill the with water from my tank, put all the livestock in one and the rock and corals in the others. I have acouple of extra powerheads and heaters I use for making my water ahead of time I will put in each bin.

you can't add one halide, because you most likely have a brace, dead center on the 90. you don't want the halide above the plastic brace.
2 x 250 would be good for a 90. (if you didn't get the tank yet, i'd go with a 75. you could use 150's on a 75, and you probably won't get any use out of the water way at the top of the 90 anyway)
does this 90 have a canopy, or will you be looking for a fixture?
what do you want to spend on a skimmer?

im using a aqua c ev-120 skimmer on my 90g.. im happy with it..very easy to tune and clean..but ur gonna get a lot of different opinions when it comes to skimmers....with lights..depending on wat u wanna keep..u might be able to use the lights u currently have..but those light will limit u to softies, shrooms some zoas...u might not be able to keep anything on the sand..well shrooms will do well on the sand with just about any light..

Well I picked up my tank last night, 90gal w/ stand and canopy. I have decided to run two 250w 15k halides w/ a PFO balast (good?), but that will have to wait a little while until I build my tank money back up. What about the coaralife superskimmer 125?

Why would you not use it? What is an ASM G2 is that the brand and model, where can you find them and how much?

Google is your friend.....I cant post up other sites here. but google will lead you to them. there are some differences even between the octo's. As well there is sometimes a wait involved in getting the MSX's and the Octo Extremes, but there's a "cave" that has the Octo's. The only place that sells the MSX's is the site that carries the same name.Don't be fooled though the MSX's and the Octo Extremes are the same exact thing. The other just has a different sticker on it. Likewise the funnel neck skimmer by Octo is a tad different, and the version I have. The differences there are the pump is a Octo 3000 that is not mesh modded and pulls a little more power, but also has a greater flow rate. The neck is smaller than the Extremes and the MSX's. The funnel neck doesn't have the bubble diffuser. And the output tube and silencer are not as nice. Now, the pump can be mesh modded, the neck handles 42 scfh on the NW 200, just fine, the bubble diffuser not being there doesn't make a huge difference, and the output tube can be gate valve modded. So...the Funnel Neck is about 60 bucks cheaper and can eventually do as well as the others, but you'll have to mod it, of course you can do a little at a time. It's going to cost a couple dollars a month more to operate it. The extreme is good to go out of the box, though you may need to mesh the pump, I cant remember if it comes meshed. It will be a tad cheaper to operate, but the replacement pump is 50 bucks more than the octo 3000.

The Octo 200 has a 8in reaction chamber, you'd have to go to a G4 to get that size of chamber with the ASM's, @ 389.00. Compared to the extreme @329, or the NW200 for 219.00, these are prices at the cave, you can find 'em cheaper. I've never had an ASM, so I cant testify for it. But I don't believe the ASM has a diffuser, and don't know about neck diameter. Or how well the sedras perform when modded, how much air they can pull etc. With that being the case, why pay 389.00, for something that needs to be modded, when 329.00 will get you the same if not even better? I would say though IMO that ASM's make a fine skimmer, you just can do better now for less.

I am not discounting anybodys opinions or advice( and I do appreciate it very much, Thanks for all the help), but what is wrong with the SS 125, does it have issues? The only reason I ask is because since I started this thread I found out a budy of mine has one he would sell me for 100 bucks. Will it work fine for awhile and I could upgrade it later?

I dunno about the coralife SS. From what I have heard they work OK, but people who have not had any experience with a better grade skimmer, think that the seaclones do well. Now from what I have heard, and from looking at the product itself, its a better skimmer than the seaclone. My self though I wouldnt spend the 100 bucks on it, he's selling it for a reason. You'd be better off financially to run without a skimmer for a while.

Could I get away without runing a skimmer for a while? My tank is not brand new(cycling) it has been running for about two years, I'm just upgrading to a larger tank.
P.S. he's selling it because he bought it for another tank build but decided to scrap the idea.
