Upgrading !YaY!

OK, so I'm not upgrading *right now*, and this is actually more of a slow planning process.
I am moving in June from this apartment and I want to upgrade my 55 gallon to either a 125 or a 180, leaning more towards the 180 (72 x 24 x 25). If I can find a used tank locally I'll go with that otherwise I'm probably going to have one built by GlassCages.
What I am wanting to know is if anyone knows any good books about the plumbing/filtration/flow that would be required for such a tank. I am going to spend these next few months slowly researching and designing the plumbing of my imaginary tank.
I am wanting to use the 55 as a sump to increase the volume of wanter in the system. I am mildly confused as to whether this is a sump or a refugium. Or are the two rather the same thing?
Once I get some ideas about all of this, I'll post diagrams of what I am wanting to do so everyone can see/point out my outlandish errors.
Any help, suggestions, etc is as always welcome.
(BTW, this seemed like the most appropriate section to post this in. If its not, feel free to move it)

im not sure such a book exists. you may have to do that sort research online, as you already started with this thread. it depends on what you want to do with that tank, Reef? aggressive? FOWLR?
but for the most part you will need a sump , or refugium (an area sustaining Macroalgae to clean the nutrients / chemicals out of the water)
and some additional source of flow, be it from Powerheads, or closed loop system...
