Are urchens good good good to have in a FOWLR tank? will they hurt other fish or inverts?? Are they really good at cleaning algea?

I have a sea urchin in my FOWLR tank and it is doing great. I heard they are not reef safe so he will be staying in my smaller tank. Though at my lfs, I saw an urchin that was labelled 'reef urchin' so there may be some types that are reef safe.

Some are reef safe and some are not. Most eat algae. Yes they eat coraline, and poop it too. Go way to spread it around.
Some urchins are posinous. Read up before you buy.

A buddy of mine got stung by his (very easy to do) and he bled like crazy. One of these days the needles will come out the other side of his hand.

I have two in my reef tank, a pincushion urchin and a black long spine. Neither of them have bothered my corals, however, my black urchin will go eat any dying matter in the tank, including corals. He will frequently eat a bit of dying xenia (I constantly have to groom that and I just drop what I pull off into the corner). I haven't noticed any difference in my coraline growth. The black spine is among my most effective animals in the clean up crew. Of course, the big down side is that he has venomous spines, so I have to continually look out for him. His spines are 8" long now (when I bought him 6 months ago they were about 2"), so it seems like he is constantly in the way. I've been stung a few times, no fun, but not really that big of a deal either. The pincushion doesn't sting and its spines aren't that sharp so I can pick him up and move him around. Overall, I highly recommend urchins.

I have a pencil urchin in my tank. He is kind of alot of work. He eats all of my coraline algea, craps all over the rock, and never eats the hair algea. Go figure. He is cool to look at, but if I had to do it again, I would not buy another one. that is just my opinion.
