I just did a 30% water change. (My Nitrite was .50ppm PH 8.4 nitrate was 5.0ppm Ammonia .50ppm) to help my fish quit panting for air. does this take a while for the positive effect to be seen in him?

It may take a day or so to get correct reading "I think" may want to wait for a better awnser. If your stuff is still alittle high then you will just have to do another water change.

do another large water change if you have corals do the same percent if its fish only do half the reason for this is ammonia is very toxic for saltwater tanks because of the ph the higher the ph the more toxic ammonia becomes

I did another water change like suggested. I also found that my aneome hermit was dead and rotting. I got him out. and added another filter to help with the removing of impurities. My 4 Strip Damsel is fine now but my Yellow Wrasse is suffering. I hope that this problem was caught in time and corrected. Thank you guys for for the help
