I'm sooo excited.
This is the player that scored both of the goals and I grew up with her:

Any game that a person born with no arms can still play is not a sport.
Darth (but it is still better than synchronized swimming) Tang

Do you consider cheerleading a sport?
In the same way I consider soft porn a sport.

A court just ruled correctly that it isn't. I don't consider anything that doesn't have a clearly defined winner and loser a sport. Doesn't mean it isn't an athletic activity.
Cheerleading does have a clearly defined winner and loser. Most cheerleading squads, including the one I cheered for, competed in competitions. There were grand champs of the competitions (which my squad was) and there were losers. We would cheer during games which was merely practice for our competitions.

And how do you define the winner and loser? Subjective judging. I don't consider that a sport. Neither is gymnastics and diving. I even consider boxing to be iffy, especially the way they score it in the olympics.

Understood. I did not last long cheering, since I did not like/agree the judging system. It was pretty much the teams that had the most money and pull won. I am a VERY competitive person and like to participate in sports in which I know my team has a shot at winning.

Well then neither is soccer, considering the ref in the semi final game between Canada and the US was clearly biased. All sports are exposed to subjective judging, reffing etc. hockey, football, soccer. My step daughter competed in gymnastics, then transferred to trampoline due to injuries. The amount of hours committed to training a week was no less than 24-30, plus school. How is this not a sport, when they compete to see who is the best.
Congrats to the US soccer team regardless of how they got there.

A blown call is a whole lot different than being judged on style. Gymnastics and cheerleading take a lot of physical ability. Think about it this way. How much time and energy does a girl put in to enter a beauty pageant? they have to be in shape, develop a talent, work on posture etc. I'd say that's pretty physically demanding to but it isn't a sport.
Different strokes I guess.

Judging based on criteria is no different than a blown call. It affects the end result of those competing, whether it's one call or throughout the entire game. One judge being biased or a panel, the same thing.
There's politics in every sport and money talks, always. Take what you want from the Olympics, leave the rest, I don't watch every event, don't care for them all, some are boring, not sure why they are there, but they are. each governing body for each sport are there to monitor.
Congrats to all the countries who have participated, win or lose, right or wrong.

talking about bad officiating, soccer game in between Korea and brasil, korean guy got kicked in the face in the penalty box and it wasn't called. Even Brazil media was baffled.

Back off topic. They hold pole dancing competitions. Would you consider that a sport. Some of those moves are physically demanding.
Darth (Strippers....keep the pole making industry going) Tang

Very cool Gemmy that you know this girl, it makes the win that much sweeter! Do you keep in touch at all? would be awesome to see a gold medal on a friend in person!
I went to school with a couple of now famous people, one I do still talk to, the other not at all, but still very excited for their successes!

My wife used to work with a 4 medal winner over two games. He was shall we say a bit full of himself.

Greater the success, more humble you have to be and remember your beginnings.

That tends to happen. Carli is pretty grounded, but her family not so much.

We still email, but don't see each other that much. She was actually supposed to be on the bench during the Olympics, but got bumped up when a starter was injured. She had a lot to prove going into the Olympics and I think she definitely did that.
