H. Barbouri
Common Names: Barbour's Seahorse, Zebra Snout Seahorse
Characteristics: H. barbouri have well developed spines. Colors typically range from white to pale yellow to pale brown, may have reddish-brown or pink spots and lines on the body. Snouts are often striped. Have fine lines radiating from the eye.
Distribution: Indonesia, Philippines and, Malaysia
Habitat: Commonly found shallow sea grass beds or clinging to hard coral.
Size
: Commonly 5 to 6 inches. May get slightly larger.
Sexual Maturity: 7 to 8 months. Their fry are benthic.
Minimum Tank Size Recommendations
: 20 gallons for a pair, 25 to 30 gallons for 2 pairs.
Water Temperature
: 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.

H. Erectus
Common Names: Lined Seahorse, Northern Seahorse
Characteristics: H. erectus are a deep chested, robust and hardy seahorse. They often have lined patterns throughout the body, with or without saddle markings. Colors typically range from black, brown, grey, green, yellow, orange, and red. Colors are not fixed and may change based surroundings, diet, stress, mood or possibly other factors. They may or may not have cirri.
Distribution: Altantic Coast of the US and in the Gulf of Mexico. They have been found as far north as Nova Scotia and are believed to go as far south as Brazil.
Habitat: Commonly found in sea grasses along coastal areas.
Size
: Commonly 5 to 7 inches. May reach up to 8 inches. Males typically larger than females.
Sexual Maturity: Believed to be around 8 months. We have seen it as early as 4 months. H. Erectus from southern waters typically have fry that are benthic. Fry from H. erectus from northern waters typically go through a pelagic phase and are more difficult to rear.
Minimum Tank Size Recommendations
: 18 inches vertical height. 20 to 25 gallons for a pair. 30 to 40 gallons for 2 pairs.
Water Temperature
: 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Common Names: Smooth Seahorse, Yellow Seahorse, Spotted Seahorse
Characteristics: H. kuda are a smooth seahorse, with low spines. Often have spots throughout the body. Colors typically range from black to pale yellows to orangish yellows. Colors are not fixed and may change based surroundings, diet, stress, mood or possibly other factors.
Distribution: Western Pacific, Indian Ocean.
Habitat: Commonly found in sea grasses along coastal areas as well as in rocky areas.
Size
: Typically 4 to 7 inches.
Sexual Maturity: 4 to 5 months. Fry are pelagic.

H Reidi
Common Names: Brazilian Seahorse, Longsnout Seahorse
Characteristics: H. reidi are among the most colorful seahorses. Colors can range from black, brown, grey, green, yellow, orange, and red. Colors are not fixed and may change based on surroundings, diet, stress, mood or possibly other factors. May or maynot have saddle markings. Often have spots thoughout the body.
Distribution: Commonly found in the carribean. Can be found as far north as the southern United States and south as far as southern Brazil.
Habitat: Commonly found in estuaries, sea grasses, mangrove roots, sponges, gorgonians, stone corals and artificial structures.
Size
: Commonly 6 to 8 inches. Older specimens may reach up to 12 inches. Males typically larger than females.
Sexual Maturity: Around 6 to 8 months. H. reidi fry are considered among the most difficult to rear. Larger older males can have broods from several hundred to as many as 1700.

H Zosterae
Common Names: Dwarf Seahorse
Characteristics: H. zosterae are a very small seahorse. In the wild they are typically found with cirri. They tend to lose the cirri in captivity. Colors typically range from black, brown, grey, green, yellow, orange, red. Colors are not fixed and may change based surroundings, diet, stress, mood or possibly other factors.
Distribution: Southern Atlantic Coast of the US and in the Gulf of Mexico.
Habitat: Commonly found in sea grasses along coastal areas.
Size
: Commonly 1 to 1.5 inches.
Sexual Maturity: Around 3 months. Fry are benthic and may be reared with adults.
Minimum Tank Size Recommendations
: Because of the size of this species and the fact that they must be fed live baby brine shrimp and/or copepods, selecting the right tank is crucial. Generally we recommend keeping small herds in 2 to 5 gallon tanks. Advanced aquarists may find success in larger tanks, but generally you will need a larger herd for larger tanks.

H. Zosterae require live foods! You must be capable of supplying live baby brine shrimp and/or copepods daily in order to successfully keep this species!
