Hey everyone, I wonder if you need a epoxy clear coat over non-toxic paints, I'm building a custom overflow box for my 180 gallon saltwater aquarium and found non-toxic paints that I plan to use to paint the box after I'm done building it, but my question is do I need to put a clear epoxy coat also ?

What materials are you using to build your overflow. I have used the black Krylon Fusion paint for my overflow found it does chip off and have recently built another design out of black PVC piping to replace it. If the epoxy is safe after cure time then it may help to paint from chipping Just my .02...BTW if you have a site online your building your overflow from like to see it, not real happy with my design its loud and sucks up fish,snails........

Could just go with epoxy paint. Not sure how well I'd trust the bond between epoxy and something like a water based paint for under water applications if that's what you're using. And would probably paint the inside of the overflow vs the outside so there's less change of scrapping or scuffing.

Overflows are real easy if make if you have access to a table saw.

forgive me guys but I'm not sure I understand what you've suggested, but may I should explain my project further, I've found a company called smooth-on.com where I plan to buy epoxy putty to create a custom overflow box from a " 6 piece of PVC pipe the putty will cover the entire pipe and I also plan to paint the overflow with acrylic paint but I'm wondering if I should also after painting brush on a clear epoxy ? I hope I'm a little more clear about my project, plus I plan to paint ornaments with a neon/ glow in the dark non-toxic paint also.

Ahh, making your own artificial reef structure. Yes I believe they always clear coat them with epoxy for protection.

Sounds like a neat idea. Hope you come back with sime pics when you make it.
