Using an R/O unit.

I might be getting an R/O unit next month and was wondering how do i even use one. I used to be keeping my fish with just dechlorinated fw mixed with sw. I havent seen an easy to use page online anywhere just places that sell them. Can anyone recommend a decent one for begginers ? I've had a sw tank before but had to shut it down.

We are not allowed to give out competitor websites on here, but if you do a google search on RO, or RODI units, the top seller sites should come up. As far as how you use it, you just hook it up to a water source, then there will be a line coming out for your "good" water, and another line coming out for your "waste" water. Keep the good water in a tub or somewhere to save, and run the waste water out to the yard or a drain. It's actually very simple, and much better for your tank.

got mine on one of the big auction sites for less than 90 dollars. i had never used one and when i recvd it i was a little overwhelmed with the installation directions but really, it was cake and there is nothing to it. it comes with a float valve so all u have to do is turn on water flow and walk away. it's easy.

There are NO dumb questions on this board. I would much rather ask the question and be mocked, than to make the mistake in my tank and have to PAY....

....and besides, once you get to know some of the people on here, you will think that you graduated from Harvard compared to them

Would it be possible to fill my tank with dechlorinated freshwater and let it cycle, then when i finnally get my ro unit i can drain 50% of the water and use ro water from then on?

you could do that but your better off starting right from the get go with the good stuff. i noticed alot of algee growing when i used the tap water. then i made the switch to RO and it has just about stopped now/snails can keep up. and it took almost a year and a half to get it all gone

I filled my tank for the first time with tap water, but I had over 300 gallons to fill when you add in the sump and all, so it was more of a logistics thing for me. So it can be done.

Just look at all of this well thought out and helpful advice. You know they should make this guy a moderator of this site. I have no idea why it has not happened yet.
Just to add on to this great advice, if you have a laundry room/area in your house or apartment they make a great place to hook up your RO unit.

Oh now Dwight, if you start giving out bad advice like that it can only hurt your chances for being promoted to Mod.
Thanks about the avatar, it is for RU. Since he is the avatar police now and I figured I could not have one flipping him the bird so the next best thing is my daughter sticking her tongue out.
