Using my built in corner overflow box for a mini refugium?

Hey everyone.. Ok so I just bought a fully established 90 gallon reef tank with sump and all.. but It doesnt have a refugium. Now I know I've seen people put some macro or mangroves in the overflow on their tank. I want to know if This really does anything? Does this act as a refugium? Like if I put some bits of live rock in there with some mangroves and such would it really be beneficial? Or should I just try to build a refugium into the existing sump.. Now I dont have the sump off hand, (still have to go pick it up on Sunday) but Im pretty sure the over flow leads right into the sump, it goes through the first area where the protein skimmer is and then through the filter/sponge gate area then the rest right into the remaining area where the external pump takes the water back up to the tank.. now should I just put an extra piece of acrylic in there to make a seperate compartment for a refugium and get a lil light? Or would adding the macro and rock to my overflow do the same thing??
