Using Power Sweep???

I was just wondering if anyone out there has been using "powersweep" powerheads by zoo med. I've been using a model 228 in my 80 gal for the last 2 months and it seems to be doing fine. I bought it because it oscilates...and that seemed cool. Any good/bad experiences????

They are high maintenance, if you want them to continue to oscillate long term. It's too late you already have them, I would recommend against them. IME

Mine stopped "sweeping", I cleaned it out and it soon stopped again. after cleaning it multiple times I gave up and simply aimed the powerhead where I wanted it to go.

I have one in my tank, but it no longer sweeps on a regular basis, more like whenever it feels like it or I hit it against something. However, the suction cups stick better than the maxijet I have.

We all three responded at the same time- LOL Words from previous/currrent owners. Just an example where the advertisment exceeds product performance....

I agree with all of those posts they are a great concept but they break/malfunction/stop sweeping ALOT! I have one that every now and then I just move the head so its pointing in another direction. they are definatly not worth what they cost.

I have had the same issues but when they work properly they are great to help with circulation. IMO they are over-rated.

I guess the future looks grim/
Oh well, I'll keep them alive as long as I can. It's a good concept IMO, too bad they don't last the test of time.

I have only had one power sweep, and it got thrown into a box (for emergency use only) as I got sick of it not working.
I have had very good luck with the Hydor FLO wavemaker. Attaches to most powerheads, much more reliable, and when it does stick, it is easy to take off and clean. I only had to clean it monthly and it almost always worked (snails had a habit of getting stuck in it). And unlike the powersweep, it provides a 360 degree rotation for more random wave motion!
My $0.02 worth.

If that's the worst investment you make in this hobby. Your still in tons better shape than most of us.
Let me steer you away from another product that is junk. The WON Pro Heat II 350W heaters. If you search the board you will find I gave glowing remarks on their product. The on-off-on is a tight adjustment -(which is good). I liked the first one so much I bought two more to replace the old contact style. I now have 3 bad $50 each heaters. They all stopped at about a year each from purchase. They read around 160 degrees. At least they didn't stick on, I had that happen many years ago and lost all fish in a SWFO tank.
I put old ones back in and got a new Fishcue > MP-Heater/ Built in Micro Processor Heater 300W. It's glass not my favorite, but it has a tight on-off-on adjustment. Only time will tell if I wasted another $60 on this one.

Grog it's been awhile since I've seen you here. How did the move go? Eveything in the tank make it?

Thanks for noticing!!!

Yea, been busy with work (80+ hour weeks). Finally got some time to play on the boards!

The move went well. One heck of a LOOOOOONNNNGGG day though.

Everything made it durring the move. My large open brain died about 6 weeks after the move so hard to tell what did it in. Either the move or my clowns hosting in it and "loving" it too much.
I forgot how much I hate moving tanks. The thing I hate most is the LR. Seems you can never get it in the same configuration as before and it never seems to sit right without 4 hours of tinkering!!!
My 125 is doing great now! Never looked better. That pesky hair algae is now totally gone (dont know why or how it got in and thrived). My beautiful rose anemone has split as well.
How U doing?

Ditto everyone. What a pain. Great when it works, but too high maintenance and shot in the dark if it will sweep even after you clean it. I had to keep turning it on and off until it starts to sweep. Finally gave up. Get a wavemeker! Search Wave2K on this site. A lot of good info on this.
