I'm so confused! I've finally gone out and gotten the QT tank set up that so many experts recommend but now my LFS guy says there is just no need for one. He says that more fish get killed from the stress of being captured and treated in the QT, than if just treated properly in the display tank.
Is there any truth to this statement?

What kind of treatment does he believe you can accomplish in a display? Hypo, copper, antibiotics cannot be done in a display with LS, LR, inverts, corals etc.
I believe you did the right thing by setting up your QT. :yes:

A couple of months ago, I bought a naso tang and put him in the display right away, now the whole tank has ick and I'm left with no choice but to treat the whole tank(150). Wish I had put him in QT instead, then I wouldn't have this problem now. You can't use copper or hypo if you have inverts or LR, LS, etc in your display. HTH

I have to admit that I agree with what everyone is saying. One thing that I can tell you for sure is that I would never want to be in the same position as harlequinnut.
I must confess that I did not have QT tank at first BUT it was not long after joining this board that I started one AND can honestly say that if I did not have one, I would have needed it several times. However having one ready and using it from the start (with each new addition)has saved me just based upon my luck alone. It is one of those things with me, I think most call it murphy's law, I call it my law. Instead of what can go wrong will, it is what can go wrong will bring lots of company with it.
SO, we do have a QT tank.

One last question then:
How do you keep your QT as close to the parameters of your display tank as possible? Should you use the water from your display or is this just placing dirty water in it?

I also learned my lesson the hard way, dead fish!
I have since set up the QT tank and have had some damsels in there for a week and a half. Thought everything was looking good and now discover they may have ick. I am so glad that I QTd them first!
I am of the opinion that every fish I get from LFS will have ick! Until they pass a 4 week quarantine, they won't go into the display.
I also keep the QT on the bottom shelf of my display so we can enjoy the fish while they are QTd or being treated.

You can use your display water, Provided your display is good shape.

What filtration do you use on that QT and what size is it?
It's very nice. Also, can you tell me why you have no substrate? I set my up with substrate and even seeded from my other tank with substrate. Was this a mistake?

It is a 20 gallon glass tank, got the entire kit for $79.00 (filter, heater, light, hood).
I just filter with the hang on back filter it came with, and one powerhead for circulation. I painted the back and bottom black (outside) and as per the recommendation of the "basic FAQ" sticky at the top of the page, use no substrate. I did put a cupful of live sand from the main tank to help the cycle. If you read that sticky on how to set up the QT tank it explains why you should not use a substrate. I put in spome plactic plants for the fish to hide in.
I also built a small canopy from plans I got form another member here, 007. Also built the display tank canopy the same way so they look the same.

It really isn't that difficult to do.
I keep QT and display temp=80,s.g.=1.025,ph=8.2,No3=0
The fish go from Qt to display with no needed acclimation. They only need to get used to a new bigger tank
:)
