Is there a problem with MH's and UV radiation? I'm looking at buying a hood and am wondering if this is something I need to be concerned with.

To my knowledge, the harmful uv rays give off by metal halides. Particularly double ended bulbs are filtered by having glass between the bulb and aquarium.
Which you probally should have anyways to limit salt creep into the bulb housing and to prevent water splash hitting the bulb.
Most bulb, ballast, hood combos have the glass guard already in them.
