uv light

I just bought a new u.v light (coralife terbo twist 9watt) for my 55gal and i wanted to run it from my sump to my tank but the local pet store told me to just run it from the sump back to the sump. so am i just recycling the same water for the most part? should i run it difrent or is this ok.:notsure:

with my pond i have the UV infront of the filter so that the filter will collect the killed algea and bacteria

Most common set up for UV is pump from sump and free drain back to sump, but if you want, pump live orgs from tank and let dead orgs drain thru. filter. Why pump dead orgs into main tank?
