Uv question.

it really all depends on your tank. Some feel that a uv sterlizer is a NEED to have, while others feel that its a nice to have but not a need, correct me if im wrong but uv sterlizers put out ozone which from what i think is not good for corals. for what purpose will you be useing it, if its to control parasites then i think that its okay to have but not on all the time, some feel that if you have a uv on itll prevent parasites 24 hours a day, but others also feel that if your fish have a dependancy on a uv that there immune system will deminish . if its to control unwated algae theres better ways of doing that(like a ro/di unit)

Here's what I have... I have a 125g. reef tank w/ a 9 and 25watt uv sterilizers. I have them running on the same pump so the water runs through one then the other. I would suggest getting a custom sealife U2 double pass sterilizer, they are awesome. It has a 5 second contact time. I also run an ozinator on my protien skimmer for 8 hours a day and my corals are just fine. Where you run into problems is when you run ozinators too long and the ozone levels get to high, but w/ uv sterilizers, you can run them all the time w/ no problems. TJ

What is the point of keeping a living ecosystem if you run it through a device designed to kill everything off??? I would say that they are a very stupid thing to put on a reef. If your temp is stable and your tank is healthy the fish will never get parasites. And they will have natural food that is not being killed in the sterilizer. They can be used for parasites. But as with everything in a reef there is a reason for everything!!! Figure out why your fish are getting them and correct that. It is a waste of a 100 bucks IMO.
