UV setup?

By putting the UV filter before the sump, wouldn't that detoxify the waste particles that build up in the filter media for the wet/dry (assuming I choose to use some)?
Most advocate putting the UV after the sump, and I don't understand why.

Put it after the sump so that clean,filtered water goes through the UV.This will keep it clean and operating better/longer...

A UV sterilizer does not clean or detoxify anything. It kills bacteria and small animals that flow through it. It will be more effective with a slower flow rate by increasing the contact time of paticles flowing through it and the UV rays. Since you use gravity to drain your tank, it would not be advisable to put the UV before the sump. You need to pump water through it, and set it up so that it will be completely full of water at all times, to make the best use of the UV light inside. Make sure you replace the lamp at least once a year.
