Every UV is diferent. It depends on what the manufacturer suggests for flow rate, tank size, and wattage.Check your specs...I leave mine on all the time. But I am running a slightly higher flow rate Than the maker says.

I see some hobbyst using 2 UV's. Is there a particular advantage to doing this, instead of running just one higher wattage UV? Or is it just that you have 2 UVs and want to use them?
As far as wattage goes, I'm with Salty. However, you will get other opinions that say use as much UV as you can get. There are arguments for either side of the wattage usage issue. There are also opinions regarding whether to use 24/7 or not. If your tank is FO or FOWLR, I see no reason not to use 24/7. If you are running a reef, then there are opinions ranging from 24-hr use to using part-time, to never using at all. I will say, IMO, that where there are fish, there should be UV usage.

I'm also running 2 uv sterilizers. The reason I have two is this... I bought this 9 watt when I didn't know much about them and I just replaced the bulb, so then I was looking at a new one 25w. U2 from custom sealife. And my LFS wouldn't give me ---- for my old one so I just decided to keep it and run them on the same line. The water runs into one then the other and back into the filter... I kinda like it that way, should have a lot of contact time. The 25w. is a double pass so... I love it. TJ
