So does mine. 24/7 on both my tanks. I've had problems before and lost everything so I bought one for each tank and knock on wood no problems since them

You can run it 24/7 or run it part time. Most would run it continuously. If you dont want to run it all the time, I would run it so that it at least turns the total water volume over 10x a day. Of course, you could run it like I do mine, NOT AT ALL. It really depends on what your wanting from it. I personally believe they are not a necessary device, or even a desired device with a reef.
