hi everyone,

I would like to ask if UV Sterilizer would be helpful to prevent ich? Any medicine I can get to cure my fishes with ich now? Or do I need to quarantine them? I have coral reef in the tank too... Any advise to cure or prevent would be great...by the way I have a 34 gallon tank.

Thank you for your help.

A UV sterilizer can help prevent Ick, but it's not a cure for Ick. Do you have fish with Ick now, or are you asking if you should treat them so they don't get Ick? If they have Ick, they should be quarantined and treated. Google "marine ick treatment" and you'll find lots of products that will cure Ick. If they do not have Ick, there is no need to treat them. You only use medicine when you need it.

There is no way to prevent Ick from being on a new fish. You should always closely inspect fish for signs of Ick, and even if you don't see any sign, quarantine the new fish for 3-4 weeks after you get them. Never put the water from the shipping bag into your tank. It may contain Ick, so it's best to never add any to your tank. I always drip-acclimate new fish, and then net them or scoop them out with my hand to put them in the tank. The best way to prevent it is to never introduce it into your tank. If you get it in your tank, you should quarantine your fish in a "hospital tank" for treatment. If you leave the fish in quarantine for 4 weeks, the Ick in the tank will die... as it has to have a host fish to survive. It cannot survive on corals or invertebrates.

hi Pegasus,

Thank you very much for the details. I will be more careful. Finally I caught all the fishes and put them in a quarantine tank as you said... but one small worst with a lot of itch died...too bad... The rest of the 4 seem to be very good now which are good~~ Now I am counting 4 weeks before I put them back in the main tank with corals...

Thank you very much again...

are you treating your quarantine fish with anything? If not your infested fish will not get rid of the ick by themselves. Please look at the disease and treatment thread for curing ick.
